Anotace:

Presidential political debates in the USA deserve researchers' special attention as every four years televised debates present to the public a fresh cross-section of American social and political life. Debates are especially interesting for linguists as they contain abundant linguistic and cultural information. This lecture explains how different methods of linguistic analysis can be applied to the same political text. Content analysis reveals thematic concentration vs. keyness of the debate. Discourse analysis helps researchers to identify implicit meanings and precedential phenomena politicians make references to. The pragmatic analysis of the debates demonstrates the speakers' communicative intentions and evaluates their impact on the listener. By conducting a holistic study of political debates, a linguist can understand the role of language in the construction of a politician's «speech identity» and understand the underlying mechanisms of political populism and propaganda. Most importantly, this multi-modal analysis allows for establishing a firm link between the language and its impact on various socio-cultural phenomena.
