Anotace:
This talk addresses the issue of teaching academic writing in English at university level using as example a new academic writing course for graduate students of English created at the Faculty of Education, Masaryk University. The approach adopted is that of genre-based pedagogy aiming at raising the students' awareness of the communicative purpose(s) that they are striving to achieve via their texts, the audience that they address, and the relationship existing between textual patterns, moves and linguistics structures. The focus is on the genre of Diploma Thesis as the most complex piece of writing that the students produce during the course of their studies. The most important components of the course comprise discourse analysis of model sections of the Diploma Thesis, group writing and discussions, individual writing and editing, peer-reviewing and teacher's feedback.
