The River: Portraying an Element

Symposium in Ostrava on 18–20 March 2026

The upcoming symposium continues the tradition of the “spatial” symposia held in Ostrava in 2011, 2012, 2016, and 2021, focussing on City, Landscape, Nature vs. Industrial Environment and Countryside and resulting in four multi-authored monographs. However, the topic of the river calls for a different approach. Whereas the city, landscape, or countryside could be examined from the perspective of the creation of space through literary texts or visual media, the river as a living element - an element in the true sense of the word - is not a space but rather an organism, a process, and therefore the way of thinking about the river needs to be different. The last symposium was entitled “Portraying Countryside in Central European Literature”. The word "portray", which can be used for both inanimate and animate objects of interest, seems to express well the conceptualisation of the river, too. We have thus abandoned the representation of space in favour of portraying the element.

The fact that the interest in the river is a topical issue today is proved by numerous expert and essayistic works on the subject, and also by the society-wide discussion related e.g. to the ongoing efforts to regulate the flow of the river, drying out once and overflowing at some other time – an increasingly frequent memento of the climate change. The environmental approach is therefore now the guiding principle. An excellent example is the Polish organisation “Osoba Odra”, supported among others by the writer Olga Tokarczuk, attempting to protect Poland's largest river from regulation by recognising the river as a legal entity. It is clear that the current view of the phenomenon of the river is characterised by a debate about its status. Is the river a subject, and therefore a living organism, or an object, a target of long-term human subjugation of the landscape?

Although the environmental approach can be encountered most often, given the current events in the world, our interest is not limited to only one aspect. The symposium is also interested in the river from other perspectives. The river as a boundary is also a key, namely the boundaries of countries, regions and cultures. The formation of such boundaries and their variability in relation to the water element, which is not static either, can be studied. Attention is attracted by the question of the  river's influence on the boundaries of the territory and its character. To what extent can a river function as a natural boundary? Is the river-boundary an obstacle or a mediator? It is clear that this perspective will be of particular interest to historians, ethnographers and regionalists in a broader sense. However, it will also be reflected in literature, especially in Silesia, where the river has often functioned as a border and this situation had an impact on the lives of the people living along its banks.

Another possible approach is to view the river as a symbol. To interpret it through images, archetypes, myths. This view may seem conservative, linked to the traditional approaches of historians of literature and art history. However, it has its justification where the authors of the works under study obviously viewed the river symbolically. For example, the ancient tradition of underworld rivers was repeatedly reflected in literary and artistic works, and in the past there was also a mythologisation of real rivers, which became representative of the whole landscape, if not a national symbol. The river also has its place in mobilities and migrations, when it becomes a path, a signpost or an obstacle.

Finally, the river can be seen from a spiritual point of view, as the sacralised, sacred, or sanctifying river. In this respect, we can reach into the distant past as well as into the far corners of the world. Although the focus of our symposium is Europe, especially Central Europe, we welcome contributions on rivers far away, even exotic, which can provide a space for comparison with thinking about this phenomenon in a purely European setting.

After the event, participants will be invited to submit their papers for a peer-reviewed multi-authored monograph. The deadline for the submission will be 30 April 2026. The book is scheduled for publication in November 2026.

Připravované sympozium navazuje na tradici tzv. prostorových sympozií, konaných v Ostravě od roku 2011 (dosud se uskutečnila sympozia na téma Město, Krajina, Příroda vs. industriál a Venkov, ze všech vznikly kolektivní monografie). Téma řeky si však žádá jiný přístup, než jsme byli dosud zvyklí. Město, krajina či venkov se daly zkoumat z perspektivy vytváření prostoru literárními texty či vizuálními médii. Řeka jako živý prvek – živel v pravém slova smyslu – není prostorem, spíš organismem, procesem, a proto i nazírání na ni bude jiné. Již poslední prostorové sympozium neslo název Portraying Countryside in Central European Literature. Slovo „portray“, využitelné jak pro neživé, tak živé objekty zájmu, se nám jeví jako příhodné i ve spojení s uvažováním o řece. Odvrhli jsme tedy reprezentaci prostoru ve prospěch zpodobení živlu.

To, že je zájem o řeku v současnosti živý, dokazují četné odborné i esejistické práce na toto téma, ale i celospolečenská diskuze spojená např. s neustálou snahou regulovat jednou vylévající se, podruhé vysychající toky, které jsou ve světě proměňujícího se klimatu stále častějším mementem. Vůdčím hlediskem je tedy v současnosti environmentální přístup. Výmluvným příkladem je polská organizace Osoba Odra, podporovaná mj. spisovatelkou Olgou Tokarczuk, která se pokouší chránit největší polskou řeku před regulacemi uznáním řeky za právní osobu. Je zřejmé, že současný pohled na fenomén řeky charakterizuje diskuze o jejím statusu. Je řeka subjekt, a tedy živý organismus, nebo objekt, cíl dlouhodobého podmaňování krajiny člověkem?

Třebaže se s environmentálním přístupem, vzhledem k aktuálnímu dění ve světě, setkáváme nejčastěji, nechceme se v našem zájmu omezovat pouze na jedno hledisko. Řeka nás zajímá také z dalších perspektiv. Klíčová je pro nás rovněž řeka jako hranice, a to  hranice zemí, regionů, kultur. Zajímá nás utváření takových hranic i jejich proměnlivost ve vztahu k vodnímu prvku, který rovněž není statický. Pozornost poutá otázka vlivu řeky na ohraničení území a jeho charakter. Do jaké míry může řeka fungovat jako přirozená hranice? Je řeka-hranice překážkou nebo prostředníkem? Je zřejmé, že tento pohled bude poutat především historiky, etnografy a regionalisty v širším smyslu. Zrcadlit se však bude i v literatuře, a to zejména v oblasti Slezska, kde řeka jako hranice nejednou fungovala a tato situace měla dopad na životy obyvatel žijících při jejích březích.

Další možný přístup je nahlížet na řeku jako na symbol. Vykládat ji pomocí obrazů, archetypů, mýtů. Tento pohled se může zdát jako konzervativní, spjatý s tradičními přístupy historiků literatury a dějin umění. Má však svou oporu tam, kde zjevně autoři zkoumaných děl řeku symbolicky nahlíželi. Např. antická tradice podsvětních řek se opakované promítala do literárních i výtvarných děl, nejednou docházelo v minulosti také k mytologizaci skutečných řek, které se stávaly zástupcem celé krajiny, ne-li přímo národním symbolem. Řeka má své místo rovněž v mobilitách a migracích, kdy se stává cestou, ukazatelem cesty nebo její překážkou.

Konečně chceme nahlížet řeku také z duchovního hlediska, sledovat řeku sakralizovanou, posvátnou či posvěcující. V tomto ohledu se můžeme dostávat jak do vzdálené minulosti, tak do vzdálených koutů země. V centru zájmu našeho sympozia je sice Evropa, zvlášť středoevropský prostor, avšak nebráníme se příspěvkům o řekách dalekých, až exotických, které mohou poskytnout prostor pro komparaci s uvažováním o tomto fenoménu v ryze evropském prostředí.
